Is Internet Marketing a Business?

Hello everyone, I’m Clark and welcome to Is Internet marketing a business? Well, yes, but hold on, don’t immediately jump to any negative conclusions. An internet marketing business is not like traditional businesses, and below I’ll explain what’s the problem with traditional business models, how an Internet marketing business is different, and if you’re interested in starting your own Internet marketing business for $0, you will find my personal recommendation at the bottom of this page.

Why Traditional Business Models Are Flawed

Let’s take a look at the farming business. To produce a crop, you have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars upfront to pay for machinery such as tractors and seeders, fertilizer, chemicals to spray for weeds, and so on.

Then you need to hope for good weather and that it rains at the right time of the year, else you would end up with a low yield or low-quality crop. Even if you get a good harvest, you only get paid at the end of all this, which is almost one year later.

Another example is running your own restaurant. You have to spend a whole lot of money even before your first customer sits down to eat. You have to pay for space, kitchen equipment, tables and chairs, etc., plus you need to hire staff.

With a traditional business model, whether it’s running a farm, a restaurant, a jewelry shop, a clothing store, and so on, you have high overheads and capital expenditures, and it will be years before you recoup your investment. A lot of small businesses fail within the first 2 years.

The Internet Marketing Business Model

Internet marketing is the activity of promoting a brand, product or service (not necessarily your own) online. To get started, no capital is required. You might want to invest in your business once you are more familiar with Internet marketing and have built your first website, but we’re talking only $300-$400/year here. Also, no previous experience in selling or managing a business is required.

There are 4 steps in Internet marketing, and anyone can do it, from students to retirees:

1) Choose a niche – an audience that you would like to market to

2) Build a website. This is your “shop”, where you welcome your potential buyers and promote helpful products to them. At Wealthy Affiliate, it costs nothing to build your first website, and you can do it with the click of a few buttons. The whole process can take less than a minute.

3) Get traffic or website visitors. No traffic = No money. This is where you need to do some work. Publishing relevant, engaging and helpful content will put you in good standing with Google and other search engines, and gets you lots of free traffic. Publishing one post (content) a day is ideal, at least at the initial stage, but if that’s not possible 2-3 posts per week is the minimum.

4) Earn money, through affiliate marketing (promoting other people’s products), placing “ads” (advertisements) on your website, etc.
