What is Amazon Affiliate Marketing?

Hey everyone, this is Clark. Let me explain below what is Amazon affiliate marketing, and how you can get started as an Amazon affiliate marketer.

Amazon (Amazon.com) is the largest online retailer in the world by total sales and market capitalization. Amazon started out as an online bookstore and later diversified by adding other items, including DVDs, MP3 downloads/streaming, software, video games, electronics, clothing, furniture, food, toys, jewelry, etc.

A Brief Intro to Affiliate Marketing

You’re probably already familiar with the concept of affiliate marketing, but if you’re not, affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s products. You choose a product that you want to promote, send people to the product website using your “affiliate link” (which is a URL – for example, http://example.com/yourid – that contains the ID of the affiliate, which is you), and then earn a commission if they buy the product through your link.

Affiliate programs are completely free to join, and there are millions of products/services out there that you can promote. Affiliate commissions can be as high as 60% (or even more).

For more details, read my post here on Affiliate Marketing.

The Amazon Associates Program

The largest affiliate program in the world by far is the Amazon affiliate program, called Amazon Associates. Amazon has over 500 MILLION products on their website and that figure is growing each day.

Amazon Associates was launched back in 1996 and is one of the first online affiliate marketing programs.

Pros and Cons of Amazon Affiliate Program

The biggest pro is that many people buy many things at ONCE through Amazon. For instance, someone looking to buy a $9 or $10 book through your affiliate link may decide to browse Amazon and buy a television, and you’ll get credit on that as well (if they buy it within a 24-hour period of clicking on your link).

Also, Amazon has an incredible product range, and many people make many purchases at Amazon each and every year.

However, the Amazon affiliate program offers very low commission rates (1-10%), so you may find yourself in a position of having to make a LOT of sales in order to achieve a full-time income.

Get Started as an Amazon Affiliate Marketer

Go to https://affiliate-program.amazon.com and click on “Join Now for Free”. Provide your name, email and password, and sign up for free. After that you’ll be asked to enter your website.

A website is the foundation of an affiliate marketing business, and it is going to be very difficult to send traffic (people) to product websites without one. Your website is where you get traffic, build brand and trust, and promote products/services.

If you already have a website, then skip the next few paragraphs. If you don’t, what you can do is register as a starter member (for free) at a website called Wealthy Affiliate.

The free membership allows you to create and “host” 2 websites at Wealthy Affiliate. And as a starter member you can access the 20 beginner training lessons that will guide you in building out your website and getting your affiliate marketing business started.

The process of building a website at Wealthy Affiliate takes less than a minute as they have the most advanced yet simplistic website platform in the world.

I’ve written a review on Wealthy Affiliate and you can read it by clicking on the link below.

To start promoting Amazon products, you can use the product search feature within their system to search for specific products that you want to promote.

On the results page, click on the arrow beside the “Get link” button. This allows you to get your affiliate link associated with this product.

Use the affiliate link within the content on your website. When customers click your link and buy products from Amazon, you’ll earn commissions.

And that’s it from me today. As always if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below and I’ll be more than happy to help you out. Thanks!

  1. This is an excellent site with some very helpful and useful information.
I knew a little about Amazon Affiliate marketing but I did not know that when someone uses my link to buy something on Amazon that I would get commission on any other spending they did while on the site so long as it is within 24 hours. That is awesome and makes me think I should be more active on Amazon.
    Thank you.

  2. Hi, Clark! Great intro to affiliate marketing and the Amazon program. I’m just delving into affiliate marketing myself and am finding there’s so much to learn! Thanks for an informative post!

  3. I actually want to create another site and I heard that some categories such as outdoor have better conversion rates. Do you have any recommendations for me? Obviously, I want to start a profitable website and I wonder that what should be my category on Amazon?

    • Hi Furkan,

In general, I would suggest digital products (e.g. training programs, self-help courses) due to the fact that they can be sold to people all over the world. However, Amazon seems to be charging reasonable shipping fees (even to overseas) so I guess you can consider categories like outdoor as well, though I’ve never heard that outdoor has a better conversion rate. By outdoor I suppose you mean things like camping backpacks, cycling bikes, etc.?
